In theory the GPS requires a view of the sky to get a fix, but dependent on many factors including the material your coachroof is made of it may well work (and lots of people use them) down below.

| A personal EPIRB will send a distress signal, but doesn't send any specific information about the user. The larger EPIRBs are designed to stay with the boat rather than be carried by an individual and store all of the relevent vessel data (MMSI, call sign, vessel name etc) which is transmitted as part of the distress signal. They also have much bigger batteries, so will be able to send a signal for a longer period. |
